Karl M. Kadish
CURRICULUM VITAE

            Karl M. Kadish is Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry at the University of Houston. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Michigan in 1967 and his Ph.D. from Penn State University in 1970. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of New Orleans in 1970/71 and a Chargé de Recherche at the University of Paris VI in 1971/72.  Before joining the University of Houston in 1976 he was on the faculty of California State University, Fullerton.  In 1981 he held a Fulbright research fellowship and was a Visiting Professor of Chemistry at the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg.  Dr. Kadish returned to France as Visiting Professor of Chemistry at ESCIL in Lyon in 1984 and in 1985 was appointed as Visiting Professor of Chemistry at the Université de Dijon, France.  Dr. Kadish was reappointed to the Dijon position a number of times between 1986 and 2004 and was also appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Rome, La Torgavata, Italy in 1990 and 1991.  He received a research fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 1994 and this was associated with a stay at Kyoto University and major lectureships throughout Japan. During the 2001/2002 academic year he held appointments as Visiting Professor in the Chemistry Department at California Institute of Technology and the University of Sydney. He also had a visiting appointment at Osaka University in 2006 and 2007. Dr. Kadish received the ACS Southeastern Texas Section Award in 1987, the Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award from the University of Houston Chapter in 1988 and the University of Houston Research Excellence Award in 1991.  Dr. Kadish was also three times commended (1990, 1991 and 1993) and awarded recognition by the Mayor and City Council of the City of Houston for his continued academic accomplishments and leadership at the University of Houston.  Most recently (2003) he was awarded a Docteur Honoris Causa from the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon France.
                Dr. Kadish's research interests are in analytical chemistry, porphyrin chemistry, chemistry and electrochemistry of compounds having biological interest, redox reactions of transition metal complexes, redox reactions of dinuclear metal-metal bonded complexes, spectroelectrochemistry and fullerene chemistry.  He has published over 430 research papers and edited 32 books while directing a research group which in total has numbered over 100 different graduate students and postdoctoral associates.  Dr. Kadish is a member of several professional societies and served as a member of IUPAC from 1979 to 1997, first on the Electroanalytical Chemistry Commission V.5 from 1979 through 1991 and more recently as a member of the Analytical Division Committee, the latter position which ran through 1997.  He has organized or co-organized a number of International Congresses, including 17 fullerene symposia, all of which were entitled "Fullerenes:  Chemistry, Physics and New Directions". He was also a co-organizer of the First and Third International Conferences on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines (ICPP-1 and    ICPP-3) which were held in Dijon, France, June 25-30, 2000, and New Orleans, LA, July 11-16, 2004, respectively. His 4000 page, 10 volume series of books entitled “The Porphyrin Handbook” was selected as the Best Chemistry Book of 1999 by the Association of American Book Publishers and another ten volumes of the Porphyrin Handbook (Vol 11-20) were published in March 2003 by Elsevier Scientific.  Dr. Kadish was North American Editor of the Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines from 1997-2002 and Editor-in-Chief since 2003.
